Working America

Dear Mark,

Sometimes, it gets really cold.

Walking on frostbitten nights in Pennsylvania, knocking on strangers’ doors for hours at a time, can sometimes make my job seem pretty tough.

But all it takes is someone to tell me how happy they are that I came to their door and how excited they are about the work that Working America is doing, to warm my spirit.

My name is Angel Gober and I’m a canvasser for Working America in Pennsylvania. Every day, canvassers like me are doing the same thing—walking door-to-door to talk with folks about how joining Working America can give them a voice in Washington. Read all of our stories on Working America’s Word on the Street blog.

I’ve been doing this job for about a year and a half now, and each day, I am inspired by the people I meet—seniors who have lost their Medicaid, working parents without health insurance who are struggling to support themselves and their children.

These are people who thought America’s political system didn’t care about them, until I came knocking on their door with an offer to make their voice heard again. And my story is one of many. Canvassers are touching the lives of working people every day in neighborhoods and towns across the country. Read all of our stories now in Working America’s canvasser blog.

What I see on my door-to-door walks is a resiliency and a hope in people—people who, quite frankly, have reason to give up. These folks give me the faith to keep trudging door-to-door, rain or snow, with the knowledge that there are many people who want to make a difference, but they just don’t know where to start. Working America is often the start of change for people.

While canvassing is no easy job, many of the experiences we have as Working America canvassers are truly inspiring. And sometimes when I’m feeling frustrated by all the doors that got shut in my face that day, or the cold wind that has chilled me to the bone, I read what my colleagues have written, and I remember why I do this job.

Check out our blog and you, too, will be reminded of how your contributions as a Working America member directly affect our ability to make a difference for working people on the ground.

Sometimes, it gets really cold when I’m out canvassing. But I always will have a wealth of stories to warm my heart. And that’s why I keep walking.

Thanks for reading my story.

Sincerely,

Angel Gober
