It's closer than you think!
The U.S. jobless rate worsened to 9.6 percent in August from 9.5 percent in July, with 54,000 jobs lost, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data out today. The private sector created only 67,000 jobs in August, far below the 150,000 jobs a month needed to keep up with the population and extremely far below the hundreds of thousands of new jobs needed each month to return to pre-recession employment levels. Government employment fell by 121,000, largely reflecting the loss of 114,000 temporary workers hired for U.S. Census 2010. Congressman Steve King has been in Washington for eight years now and he has not once debated an opponent. During this time, he has voted for massive tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% and for corporations shipping Americans jobs overseas while opposing increases in the minimum wage and tax cuts for the middle class. Steve King has been able to do all this without even acknowledging the questions of his opponents. All over the country, Republican candidates are offering nonsense solutions that have no chance of solving the nation's economic issues. House Minority Leader John Boehner laid out on Tuesday his economic plan, which the Washington Post said could be "literally reduced to five easy tweets." Bohener's proposals consisted mostly of partisan attacks on Obama administration officials and calls to repeal the historic accomplishments of the past two years, including ending the remaining stimulus spending (including the tax cuts for working families included in that) and allowing insurance companies to drop customers whenever they please. In Iowa today, the Alliance for Retired Americans is on the ground talking with seniors and Iowans about issues that affect retired older Americans. A proud union partner, the Alliance works for the security of working families heading into retirement. Last week, hundreds of excited and energized union members from around the state gathered in Altoona to discuss the future of the labor movement in Iowa. The 54th Iowa AFL-CIO Convention was called to order by President Ken Sagar, who took the opportunity to talk about the upcoming gubernatorial election. “Terry Branstad is not our friend.
