Going Down Swinging

It was nearly a year ago when I first wrote about the employee lockout at American Crystal Sugar Co., a contract dispute that has dragged on nearly a year and a half affecting 1,300 union workers from North Dakota, Minnesota and 23 employees from Mason City, Iowa.

I’ll never forget the response I got from one of the employees at our local United Sugar plant last year as I walked across the highway and asked, “How you doing?”
