Two-day school designed to prepare new union stewards for effective workplace representation. Sessions on roles and responsibilities of stewards, basic labor law, rights and roles in investigatory (Weingarten) meetings, grievance investigation and presentation, and introduction to labor history and union values.

Designed for union officers responsible for union financial recordkeeping (in the private or public sector), this program includes sessions on IRS reporting requirements, LM and PERB forms, audits, changes in Department of Labor regulations, accounting skills, and budgeting.

Kim Bobo, Executive Director, Interfaith Worker Justice, returns to Iowa for two events:
· Public workshop on community coalitions and worker justice: Saturday, Sept. 15, 2:30 p.m., Coralville Public Library, Schwab Auditorium, 1401 5th St., Coralville
Kim Bobo will conduct an introductory public workshop about Interfaith Worker Justice and its national network of worker centers. This would be a great meeting for faith leaders, community groups, or individuals who have not yet been involved in local discussions about creating a workers’ center, as well as those who have been involved and would like to understand more about IWJ and its work. Barbara Ehrenreich, Fall 2012 Univ. of Iowa Lecture Committee series
Monday, Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m., Englert Theater, 221 E. Washington St., Iowa City
Ehrenreich, best known for her 2001 book, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, currently heads the Economic Hardship Reporting Project . An endeavor inspired in part by the Federal Writers Project of the 1930s, the initiative aims “to force this country’s crisis of poverty and economic insecurity to the center of the national conversation.”
