AFL-CIO and United Way Partnership

Dear union members,

I ask you to join me in support of the 2012 United Way campaign.
One hundred and twenty-five years ago, a Denver woman, a priest, two ministers and a rabbi saw a need for cooperative action to help Denver with its welfare issues.
Today, United Way is still helping cites all over America with welfare issues.
America is still in a financial crisis, not seen since the great depression. Millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet, and with the help of United Way many of the people are making progress. United Way is working hard on a program to reduce the drop-out rate in high schools. It has a program to help working families get on the road to economic independence and another one to get everyone healthier and extended health care.
AFL-CIO Community Services has worked, nationally and locally, in partnership with United Way to help serve those in need in our communities. Local United Ways dedicate millions of dollars annually to fund the AFL-CIO Community Services network in state federations and central labor councils.
We all know someone who is in need of assistance, and United Way is there to help them.
Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United.
Please help me in supporting the 2012 United Way campaign where you live and work. By doing so, you will be making a difference in the lives of those that need help.

The national partnership between the AFL-CIO and United Way has never worked at a higher level that we find it today. Recently, AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka filmed an endorsement video for the upcoming United Way campaign. Additionally, United Way Worldwide President and CEO Brian Gallagher filmed a thank you video for all that labor does to help United Way – specifically volunteering their time and resources. Finally, we just presented and recorded a Webinar for State Feds/ CLCs and local United Ways that better explain the partnership between the AFL-CIO and United Way.

I encourage you to watch and share these far and wide. Additionally, ensure workers in your area are aware of both videos as the annual United Way campaign is just around the corner.
